Job Description

The Downtown School is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and collaborative educator who is passionate about teaching biology and chemistry. Successful candidates will hold at least a bachelor's degree in biology and/or chemistry, with an advanced degree strongly preferred, and have experience teaching biology and/or chemistry in a high school or college setting. The ideal candidate will have a passion and expertise for science, strong interpersonal and team-building skills, loves working with teenagers, and has a positive outlook and growth mindset. Experience with interdisciplinary study and/or teaching is considered an asset. A willingness to collaborate and engage in a dialogue about instructional practices with peers and a commitment to diversity and inclusion are essential.

The Downtown School is seeking someone who has experience with real world applications of learning and building partnerships with businesses and organizations. The Downtown School will consider applicants with a high proficiency in technology and willingness to engage in professional development in lieu of direct experience.

Responsibilities
  • Teach two sections of Biology, two sections of Chemistry, and one section of Adv. Molecular Biology
  • Advise a group of 12-14 students
  • Provide academic support outside of the classroom for students with different learning styles and strengths
  • Provide regular feedback to students through the form of formative and summative assessments as well as writing quarterly comments
  • Regularly meet with other science faculty to discuss issues related to the science curriculum and instruction at The Downtown School
  • Participate in the life of the school community, faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and general engagement with student life
  • Use the City as a Lab, integrating curricular partnerships and excursions into their curriculum

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree (masters preferred) in biology, chemistry, bio-chemistry or a related field
  • Experience working with students in a laboratory setting
  • Experience designing and implementing curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty both in and out of the science department
  • Comfortable working with computers to present daily lessons and online learning platforms for tracking assignments and grades (e.g., Canvas is a plus, but experience is not required)
  • High level of organization skills with an attention to detail and deadlines

Curriculum
The science program seeks to spark in students a lasting enthusiasm for science. Through explorations of the natural world, students develop a deep sense of curiosity grounded in an understanding of scientific inquiry, process, and content in the life and physical sciences.

Students learn to think like scientists by actually doing science: framing meaningful questions, analyzing data, identifying patterns, and applying their understanding to different situations. In the process, students take intellectual risks by engaging in a process of experimentation and revision. In addition to
traditional classroom labs and activities, students have opportunities to learn from Seattle-based scientific institutions and educational organizations, deepening the students’ understanding of career paths in science and the role that science plays in the larger world.

Over the course of four years, students will learn to:
  • Be curious about their world and develop an interest in exploring it further.
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Hone critical scientific-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Draw connections between different scientific disciplines across different scales and contexts.
  • Understand science content to the level needed to act as informed, responsible citizens who know how science connects to the larger world.

Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $28,600-$30,000
