Job Description

Summary

The Director of HIM will have direct oversight and responsibility of coding, medical records, and documentation improvement.  The Director of HIM is responsible for data quality and integrity and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, internal policies and procedures and the Code of Business Conduct and Ethics (“Code of Conduct”).  The Director of HIM works collaboratively with members of other departments and leadership to ensure organizational goals are met.

Responsibilities
  • Oversight of medical record documentation and coding.
  • Collaborates with other departments and senior leadership to ensure ongoing alignment of priorities and drives measurable improvement across the HIM service line.
  • Provides HIM expertise and direction to division leadership regarding department development, clinical integration, and operational excellence.
  • Provide training to clinical, coding, and administrative staff on medical record documentation requirements and related coding requirements on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure documentation and coding practices meet national coding and compliance guidelines.
  • Regular monitoring of coding accuracy and productivity.
  • Maintain coding policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology to ensure that system codes are updated and available in the system for assignment to a medical record.
  • Provide regular performance updates to leadership.
  • Ensure proper reporting of violations or potential violations to Compliance and Leadership.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable coding guidance, policies laws, and regulations.
  • Continuously update the coding and documentation program considering changes in the needs of the businesses and in the laws, regulations and related guidance produced by government agencies.

Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, disease processes and diagnostic/surgical procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding principles, rules and reimbursement structures.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Ability to independently manage and set priorities in a fast-paced environment often with competing demands on time.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in related field
Previous, Job Relevant Work Experience:
  • 5-7 years of experience in physician and outpatient coding in leadership position
  • Well versed in orthopedics, pain management, physical and occupational therapy coding
  • Well versed in physician practice and ambulatory surgery center coding guidelines
  • Well versed in coding and billing compliance
Credentials/Licensures
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Current CPC, COC, or CCS-P certification

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous, Job Relevant Work Experience: 10 years of experience in physician and outpatient coding in a leadership position
Credentials/Licensures:  Specialty coding certification (ASC, Orthopedics, E/M)
