We are looking for a well-qualified, enthusiastic, ambitious, adaptable, hardworking, and creative individual to join our team! This position falls under the general supervision of the Northern Lands Program Supervisor for the South Coast Region. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of interpretation, education, and outreach (IEO) materials and projects that support regional and statewide programs, plus the organization and implementation of programming throughout Region 5. This includes carrying out Sport Fishing Restoration Act (SFRA) Aquatic Education to plan interpretive exhibits and programs; plan, organize and conduct interpretive walks and trails; apply scientific knowledge, methods, and techniques in obtaining, arranging and interpreting data, and in collecting, identifying and cataloging specimens; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work; interpret resource concepts to the public; communicate effectively; develop innovative solutions to interpretive problems; prepare written material for reports and publications; keep necessary records and prepare reports; maintain landscape at facilities and State Lands. Oversee the upkeep of regional interpretive buildings and equipment, including interpretive trails, kiosks, signage, boats, trailers, aquaria, etc.

Class Title: Fish and Wildlife Interpreter I/
This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Office will be located at the Back Bay Science Center in Newport Beach. At times, work hours may be 10+ hours per day (particularly during the spring and summer season), working indoors and outdoors, occasional weekend and/or evening work is required. Outdoor conditions can include being on a boat, working with nets and other survey equipment, doing work on a boat dock, working with marine life in aquaria, attending special events, walking on CDFW lands. Most days include a lot of walking and moving around. Indoor conditions typically include working at a desk on a computer, or teaching in a classroom setting. Office will be located at the Back Bay Science Center in Newport Beach. Working with large school groups of various grade levels, the general public, and several different partner groups. Must be willing to work in and around water, often times in muddy conditions.
Ability to work both independently and as a team, communicate effectively, manage high stress situations in a calm, organized and professional manner, and to represent agency viewpoint without personal conflicts. Must be willing and capable to lift 40 lbs. Must be willing to work atypical hours and occasional weekends. Must be willing to handle live animals, carcasses, and conduct sampling measurements. Must be willing and capable of cleaning and maintaining aquaria and marine life support systems, both indoor and outdoor displays.
This position requires the possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Experience handling live marine life, aquarium maintenance, managing databases, conducting and facilitating environmental education programs, curriculum development, grant writing and reporting, and volunteer management. Must possess a valid Driver’s License, a clean driving record, and be able to operate a State vehicle.
