Job Description



Job Summary: The Research Assistant II Non-Lab (RAII) will support Prof. David Bloom's research portfolio with quantitative data analysis, desk research, and communications tasks. The RAII will work simultaneously on multiple research projects, such as a longitudinal aging study in India; paving a path for the development vaccines against group A Streptococcus; and an evaluation of the full societal impact of new models of care for type 1 diabetes. Work on these and other related projects will take place under the supervision of Professor Bloom. The RAII will also provide research support for the fall course GHP272: Foundations of Global Health and Population, and other quantitative data analysis and modeling projects as assigned.

For the GHP272 course, the RAII will research current public health events, update PowerPoint presentations, draft speaking notes, and other duties related to the course as assigned by Prof. Bloom. The RAII will work on GHP272 in collaboration with a teaching team that will consist of the course instructors and teaching assistant(s).

The RAII will conduct literature reviews, assemble dossiers, and other forms of desk research in addition to completing statistical analysis of publicly available datasets from sources such as the U.S. Census, the Health and Retirement Survey, the American Community Survey, and United Nations data sets. The RAII will also support the development of survey instruments, data collection, and data management protocols for Prof. Bloom's projects.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for drafting and editing project communications, manuscripts, progress reports, and social media materials. Communications with external contacts and University departments will be part of the assigned duties as well and require a high degree of professionalism. The RAII will work in close collaboration with other members of the research team led by Prof. Bloom to complete many of the qualitative and quantitative research tasks.

Position Description: Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conducting qualitative research (literature reviews) and quantitative research (description and analysis of macroeconomic, microeconomic, and biostatistics and other data)
  • Researching current public health events, updating PowerPoint presentations, drafting speaking notes, liaising with guest speakers, instructors, and teaching assistants and other duties related to GHP 272
  • Drafting and editing correspondence, memos, speaking notes, reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication
  • Developing funding proposals and budgeting materials
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, mathematics, or other field with quantitative emphasis preferred
  • Knowledge of various research methods and statistical techniques preferred
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred
  • Experience analyzing large survey datasets preferred
  • Familiarity with Endnote, Zotero or other reference software preferred
  • Strong writing and editing experience preferred
  • Experience working well with and communicate across cultures preferred
  • Experience working well independently; excellent time management skills; strong attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication skills preferred

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).
