Job Title: Director, Victim Assistance Program

Location: Tampa, Florida
Compensation Range: $100,000 - $125,000 salary and specific salary determinations will be commensurate with experience. The position is employed by Hillsborough County and eligible for benefits, including health insurance, retirement programs, etc., through Hillsborough County.

Position Overview:

 

The Director of the Victim Assistance Program is a critical leadership role within the Office of the State Attorney, 13th Judicial Circuit, dedicated to providing comprehensive support and advocacy for victims of crime. This position requires a compassionate, experienced, and highly organized individual with a deep understanding of the criminal justice system and a commitment to ensuring victims' rights are protected and their needs are met. The Director will oversee all aspects of the Victim Assistance Program, including staff supervision, budget management, program development, community outreach, and compliance with relevant statutes. The Director works closely with the State Attorney, Chief Assistant State Attorney, and Chief of Staff to align the program’s efforts with the agency’s overall mission.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Victim Advocacy & Support:

 

  • Oversee efforts to guide and support victims through the criminal justice process, ensuring they are informed of their rights and resources.
  • Develop innovative strategies to improve the notification of victims regarding court hearings and case developments.
  • Ensure timely and accurate communication with victims regarding case status, available support services, and legal rights.
  • Serve as a liaison between victims, prosecutors, law enforcement, and social services agencies.

Program Management & Compliance:

 

  • Ensure the Victim Assistance Program meets all statutory requirements related to victim rights and services.
  • Establish program goals, performance metrics, and quality assurance standards to assess and improve program effectiveness.
  • Stay informed about changes in legislation that impact victim assistance programs and ensure the office remains compliant.

Leadership & Team Management:

 

  • Supervise and support a team of victim advocates, notification specialists, and administrative personnel.
  • Provide training, professional development, and mentorship to enhance staff performance and retention.
  • Ensure team members are equipped with the tools and knowledge to provide high-quality crime victim services.

Budget & Resource Management:

 

  • Develop and oversee the program’s budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Identify and apply for grants or external funding opportunities to enhance program sustainability.
  • Monitor expenditures and financial constraints while maintaining program integrity and service quality.

Collaboration & Community Engagement:

 

  • Work closely with the State Attorney to integrate victim services into the agency’s public safety mission.
  • Establish partnerships with social service agencies, law enforcement, mental health providers, and victim advocacy organizations to enhance support for crime victims.
  • Represent the Victim Assistance Program in community outreach initiatives, training sessions, and public awareness campaigns.

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, public administration, or a related field (master’s or Juris Doctorate preferred).
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in victim services, criminal justice, social work, or a related field, with at least 4 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of victim rights laws, criminal justice procedures, and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Experience managing teams, budgets, and program operations.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and handle sensitive information with discretion and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience in a prosecutor’s office, law enforcement agency, or similar criminal justice setting.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and funding management.
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish or other languages) are a plus.
