Job Description and Duties

This position can be filled in the following counties:  Orange, Sacramento (See Working Conditions Section for Details)


Under the direction of the Branch Chief, this position is responsible for enforcement of the provisions the Business and Professions Code and the California Code of Regulations as they pertain to Division programs assigned to the incumbent. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the work performed by investigative staff based in all Division offices.

  • Supervises, directs, and coordinates the performance of assigned investigative staff and activities of the Division’s programs within the Enforcement Branch, investigation of suspected violations of the Business and Professions Code and the California Code of Regulations.

  • Reviews, evaluates, and approves investigative reports and provide technical assistance to investigation staff’s criminal and civil filings to ensure the timely and effective conclusion of the investigation.

  • Plan and direct investigators to meet Division, Department, and the State of California strategic plans and goals.

  • Analyzes legislation for its impact on Division programs. Evaluates legislative needs and prepares proposals to meet those needs.

  • Reviews and approve travel claims, attendance reports, mileage logs, weekly activity reports, and other staff reporting documents requested by management.

  • Develops unit training and staff development plans to ensure necessary skills and career opportunities for staff to increase and improve effectiveness of the program.

  • Serves as liaison, consults with and provides assistance to local weights and measures jurisdictions in the development of inspection procedures suitable for industry practices.

  • Consults with and provides assistance and expertise to county weights and measures officials in the performance of Division activities and in the resolution of problems.

  • Performs other duties as appropriate in support of Division programs.

  1. Describe the depth and breadth of experience you have in criminal and/or civil case preparation and working with law enforcement and legal personnel, e.g., District Attorneys, regarding planned or pending legal actions. Include the outcome of the enforcement actions you were involved with.

  2. Describe the depth and breadth of experience you have developing and presenting formal training to staff or external stakeholders (developing training materials, PowerPoints, handouts, demonstrations, student assessment, etc.).

  3. Describe the depth and breadth of experience working with industry representatives, Division staff, and other governmental agencies regarding the application and enforcement of laws and regulations. If your experience includes the enforcement of laws in Division 5 of the California Business and Professions Code relating to licensed weighmasters, motor oil assessment fee payers, registered service agencies and service agents, commercial device approval, testing and sealing, and package inspection and price verification, list all that apply.
